The WB Kids program aspires to provide barrier-free participation to the sport, recreation, social and cultural programs and activities in the Wood Buffalo region

The program offers three streams of support via WB Kids & WB Kids Clubs.

Vision

To enhance the quality of life in Wood Buffalo by ensuring every kid can afford to have fun.

Mission

To provide financial assistance to support Wood Buffalo youth and families that face barriers to participation in sport, recreation, social and cultural programs and activities.

Goals

  • Provide confidential and timely assistance to youth and families

  • Maximize accessibility to program assistance across the region

  • Ensure the financial  sustainability of the WB Kids program via fundraising efforts and accountability

  • Recruit and retain partners that share a similar vision

How to Apply

The online application must be filled out by the nominee’s endorser. Contact us through email for any questions or concerns.

All application forms require:

  • Endorser information: Name, phone number, e-mail address and relationship to nominee; supporting paragraph

  • Nominee information: Name, age, mailing address, parent/guardian name(s) and occupation(s), specific request for funding and need for said funding. Third party nominations are encouraged. Please note that at the time of submission the nominee must be 17 years of age or younger.

WB Kids Eligibility and Application Process

Teachers, coaches, and community members can nominate youth to receive program and activity funding up to a maximum of $600.00 per calendar year for community-based programming and up to $250 per calendar year for school-based programming.

WB Kids defines school-based programs as those administered, organized, or delivered within a school setting (e.g., high school basketball), where registration is managed by the school or school district.

Children who access funding for school-based programming remain eligible to apply for the remaining balance (up to $600 total) toward community-based programs within the same calendar year.

Examples of eligible programming includes but is not limited to:

  • Registration fees for sport, recreation, social & cultural programs and activities

  • Facility access to amenities based throughout the communities of the region, including the Suncor Community Leisure Centre, Miskanaw Golf Club, Anzac Recreation Centre presented by CNOOC, and the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre

  • Recreational clubs such as Fort McMurray Oil Sands Curling Club, Noralta Skating Club, and more

  • Any need approved by the WB Kids committee that is deemed in the interest of kids having fun

Please note that WB Kids does not provide funding for travel expenses.

Fundraising

  • Five percent (5%) of all eligible Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo facility partnerships

  • All net proceeds from the sale of the WB Kids merchandise

Developed as an extension of the WB Kids Program, this initiative is committed to providing financial support to non-profit community organizations and volunteer groups dedicated to offering recreational and cultural youth programs within the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.

Goal

To increase youth engagement in sport and recreation, strengthen community programs by encouraging innovation, and promoting accessibility and inclusion to elevate the quality of local youth programs.

Eligibility

Non-profit organizations that operate youth programming focused on recreation, sports, social, and cultural activities within the boundaries of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo are eligible to apply.

Application Deadlines:

  • Spring February 28

  • Fall August 31

Application Process

WB Kids Clubs will be awarded to applicants who excel in the following areas:

  • Impactful Outreach | Demonstrated success in reaching and engaging a significant number of participants in their youth programs.

  • Championing Accessibility and Inclusion | A clear commitment to making programs accessible to all, regardless of background or ability.

  • Demonstrated Need for Funding | A compelling case outlining the requirements necessary to sustain or expand their initiatives. Provide evidence of a large volume of volunteerism and/or fundraising. 

  • Positive Impact on Youth Well-being | A proven record of positively contributing to the physical and mental health and overall well-being of the youth in the RMWB.

Additional Information

This application process operates biannually, with two intake periods per year. Each eligible organization can apply once per calendar year, ensuring fair access to the WB Kids Organizational Funding Program. This system promotes a more inclusive and diverse range of initiatives that can benefit from our support. Eligible organizations are encouraged to plan their applications accordingly.

The maximum funding request is Five Thousand dollars ($5,000) per application.

Applications are approved at the sole discretion of the WB Kids Committee and subject to eligibility requirements. Preference will be given to first-time applicants.
