The competitive side of the Syncrude Aquatic Centre at MacDonald Island Park, including the competitive pool, training pool, adult hot tub and steam room, will reopen at 4:00 pm on Friday December 9. The family hot tub will also re-open at this time. Some amenities on the leisure side, including the spray park, water slides and lazy river, will remain closed for completion of a routine maintenance task.

Wild Colour Portraits by Russell Thomas opens December 1 at MacDonald Island Community Art Gallery presented by Kirschner Family Corporation
The MacDonald Island Community Art Gallery presented by Kirschner Family Corporation is pleased to welcome Wild Colour Portraits by Russell Thomas to the Suncor Community Leisure Centre as the final exhibition of 2016.
The exhibition is a collection of over 80 paintings created by local visual artist, actor, writer, director and producer Russell Thomas. Thomas has received significant local, provincial and national attention for his work, which has evolved rapidly since he began painting portraits with acrylics in 2014.
Representatives of the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC) and Scotiabank celebrated the success of the 2016 Scotiabank MI Summer Camps on Wednesday, November 9.
This summer, over 1,200 children in Fort McMurray and Anzac experienced summer camp for free thanks to the partnership with Scotiabank. The Scotiabank MI Summer Camps, held at MacDonald Island Park and the Anzac Recreation Centre presented by Nexen Energy, were filled with fun, friendship and new experiences for children ages 12 and under in the Wood Buffalo region.
MacDonald Island Park is honoured to serve as the host venue for the annual Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 165 Remembrance Day ceremony on Friday, November 11.
The ceremony will take place at the Suncor Community Leisure Centre and will include representatives from the Wood Buffalo detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Fort McMurray Fire Fighters Local 2494, RMWB Emergency Services, the Fort McMurray Army Cadet Corps 2803, and 868 Rotary Northstar Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron, among other community groups.
Due to overwhelming community response to the “Christmas for Fort McMurray” initiative, the distribution centre located at Shell Place is now closed as all donated items have been distributed to Fort McMurray families in need.
“Christmas for Fort McMurray” was created by Helga and Terry Lempriere of High River, Alberta. Inspired by their own experience after the floods in High River and the subsequent donation they received of Christmas décor, the Lemprieres organized an effort to collect donations of new Christmas décor to be delivered and distributed in Fort McMurray.
