(Fort McMurray, June 6, 2013) - Standing atop a 1.1 million pound, 51-foot long Komatsu 930E haul truck, SMS Equipment President and Chief Executive Officer Bruce Knight announced SMS Equipment as the naming partner for the new SMS Stadium at Shell Place on Thursday afternoon at the SMS Equipment 63N site.
The announcement was delivered in front of hundreds of SMS Equipment staff, ‘Mi Team’ members and local media, as Knight was joined on the haul truck by Dennis Chmielewski, General Manager of Fort McMurray Operations for SMS Equipment; Allan Vinni, Acting Mayor, Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo; and Tim Reid, Chief Operating Officer at MacDonald Island Park.
SMS Stadium, which is currently under construction as part of the Shell Place project adjacent to the Suncor Community Leisure Centre, is on schedule to open in 2015. The partnership represents a $500,000 commitment from SMS Equipment over a five-year term. SMS Equipment also announced a commitment to support the Mi KIDS program, which aims to provide barrier-free participation to sport, recreation, social and cultural programs and activities in the Wood Buffalo region.
"SMS Equipment employees in Fort McMurray are key contributors not only to our success, but more importantly, to the success of the community," said Knight. "We are committed to doing our part in ensuring Fort McMurray and the Wood Buffalo region becomes an even better place to call home and this partnership with MacDonald Island Park and SMS Stadium is one of which we are proud. We look forward to continuing what is already a strong relationship and to fostering sustainable community development that benefits our great employees and everyone in the region."
SMS Equipment continues its strong support of MacDonald Island Park with SMS Stadium: SMS Equipment is currently naming partner at SMS Equipment Child Mind and Indoor Playground at the Suncor Community Leisure Centre in addition to being Zamboni Partner.
“Building on an existing partnership with SMS Equipment is yet another exciting step forward in the development of an entirely new community sports and entertainment experience in the Wood Buffalo region,” said Reid. “With the announcement of SMS Stadium the community can begin to truly envision the future. We are tremendously appreciative of partners like SMS Equipment that displays its dedication to community through initiatives like SMS Stadium and support of Mi KIDS, as well as their longstanding support of MacDonald Island Park.”
Nick Sanders, Chair of the MacDonald Island Park Board of Directors, notes the continued support of SMS Equipment means increased sustainability in the delivery of key community programs and services at MacDonald Island Park.
“It’s so much more than a partnership on a stadium and a logo on a field. The contribution from SMS Equipment for SMS Stadium and for Mi KIDS means we’ll be even more capable of bringing to the region the important day to day recreational, cultural and event services – in a world class fashion – that the community deserves,” said Sanders.
